No one knows what is causing the series of mishaps taking place on the set of a movie starring Tom Cruise in the role of Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg — the man who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

Over the weekend, the movie's production team confirmed that footage for "Valkyrie," shot two weeks ago at the Defense Ministry in Berlin, suffered irreversible damage.

The botched scene depicts von Stauffenberg's execution after the failed military coup he was part of.

According to the production team, the wrong liquid was used to develop the footage, ruining the film. German film experts said they believe it was intentionally sabotaged. "I have never heard of a case where film is soaked in the wrong liquid without anyone noticing the mistake," a member of the production team told German newspaper Tagesspiegel.

The damage to the footage is the latest in a series of mishaps that have been associated with the shooting of the movie. At first the German authorities refused to let Tom Cruise film at a historic site that serves as a memorial site for the anti-Nazi underground, because of Cruise's involvement in Scientology.

Following prolonged negotiations, the permit was granted with restrictions. Among other things, the Germans tried to prevent the crew from flying Nazi flags at the site during filming.

About a month ago, during filming at the Defense Ministry, an accident occurred on the set: Several stand-ins playing German soldiers were being transported in a military truck when the back door opened and several them fell out and were injured.
