French band performs at local JCCs

French Jewish/gypsy band Les Yeux Noirs (The Black Eyes) will be in the Bay Area for a series of performances, including an Aug. 11 show at the Osher Marin JCC and an outdoor picnic concert at Foster City's Peninsula Jewish Community Center Aug. 12.

Led by brothers Eric and Olivier Slabiak, the Paris-based octet blends Chassidic rhythms and manouche (French gypsy jazz).

Boteach donates TV winnings to JFS

To NBC, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach may just be one in 100. But to the Jewish Family Service of Bergen County, N.J., he's a whole lot more.

Boteach, host of TLC's "Shalom in the Home" and author of many books on Jewish topics, recently appeared on the NBC show "1 vs. 100" as a "celebrity expert." As one of 16 finalists, Boteach won $10,000 and announced on the air that he would be donating the proceeds to Bergen County's Jewish Family Service.

Boteach presented the prize money to JFS at a recent press conference.
