Marin JCC to help woman whose house is sliding

Miki Raver, director of adult and senior programs at the Osher Marin Jewish Community Center, has been losing her home of 18 years — bit by bit.

It's been slipping away on what is now a very dangerous hillside in Oakland, and is expected to be demolished any day now.

Raver and her husband, Martin Perlmutter, are temporarily staying with neighbors, but need their own place to live until they can get back on their feet. Their insurance will not cover their loss, since it isn't clear what is causing the landslide. In the meantime, the mortgage is still due on the property, despite Raver and Perlmutter having to cover demolition costs.

The JCC is seeking donations to help the couple and trying to find housing for them in Marin. Miki Raver can be reached at the JCC at (415) 444-8062 or through email at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Chosen beer marks its first decade

It's been 10 years since Jeremy Cowan launched the beer with the distinct Jewish identity, a brew that quickly took off around the country.

Now, He'Brew beer is celebrating its anniversary with two events in San Francisco, home of the Shmaltz Brewing Company.

The first event, featuring the Jewgrass Boys, begins 8 p.m. Monday, June 19 at Amnesia, 853 Valencia St., S.F., and the second takes place 6 p.m. Thursday, June 22 at Toronado, 547 Haight St., S.F. At the second event, all He'Brew beers — including two anniversary specials — will be on tap.

In vitro doctor at Cultural Jews event

Dr. Arnold Jacobson will be the guest speaker at the monthly gathering of the Tri-Valley Cultural Jews 7 p.m. Friday, June 16 in Alamo.

The evening will begin with a secular Shabbat observance. There is no charge, but guests are asked to bring a potluck dish for eight people.
