Follow j. on   and

new york (ap) | Jewish photographer Arnold Newman died Tuesday, June 6. He was 88.

Newman was a master of "environmental portraits." His use of evocative settings and lighting revealed the character of artists and politicians that he photographed.

Among his best-known works were portraits of Igor Stravinsky at the piano, Marc Chagall in his studio and David Ben-Gurion holding Israel's Declaration of Independence.

In a 1990 interview with the Jewish Bulletin, Newman said, "Photography was very much a part of the Jewish experience."
