Torah study from dusk ‘til dawn

Follow j. on   and

An all-night study session on Shavuot will be held June 1 at the Berkeley-Richmond Jewish Community Center. Coordinated by Rabbi James Brandt, Director of the Jewish Community Federation's Center for Jewish Living and Learning, the event begins at 9 p.m. and continues through dawn the next morning. For more details, call (510)839-2900 ext. 231.

Staying up to study Jewish texts for all or part of the first night of Shavuot is a traditional way to celebrate the holiday. This custom is called a tikkun, meaning a particular time devoted to study.

Other tikkuns include Kol HaEmek (Redwood Valley) at (707) 468-4536; Temple Isaiah (Lafayette) at (925) 283-8575; Congregation Beth Am (Los Altos Hills) at (650) 493-4661; and Congregation Kol Emeth (Palo Alto) in association with Congregations Etz Chayim and Keddem, at (650) 948-7498.
