Book awards celebrate top authors of 2005

Israeli author Amos Oz received the top prize at this week's 2005 National Jewish Book Awards ceremony for his memoir "A Tale of Love and Darkness."

The event — held Wednesday in Manhattan — honored 18 other authors, including Berkeley writer Michael Chabon for his novel "The Final Solution."

The ceremony also featured an award-winning father-daughter duo: David Ellenson, president of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and author of "After Emancipation," and Ruth Andrew Ellenson, editor of "The Modern Jewish Girl's Guide to Guilt."

Authors Ari L. Goldman and Samuel G. Freedman hosted the ceremony, now in its 55th year.
