Doc's guide to keeping fit

Don Linker, who is a doctor and reportedly something of a "health nut," says he wrote "Keep It Up, Harry Potbelly!" (with writer Edwin Heaven) "because there were no humorous health and fitness books around." It's an easy read, full of information and interspersed with cartoons and — yes — humor. Joel Renbaum, Michael Luckoff, John McCosker, Will Weinstein and Max Shapiro, all of Marin, provide the back-cover tributes. Covering lifestyles

Businessman/philanthropist and Koret Foundation President Tad Taube is a cover boy — in a very good sense. His photo graces the cover of Lifestyles, a glossy, high-end magazine that features Jewish movers and shakers in the worlds of philanthropy, business, culture and entertainment. (Among his content mates are Sid Caesar and Jason Alexander — aka George in "Seinfeld.") Based on his own experience, Taube advises people not to "get overly focused on finding the perfect career by a certain age or time. We have no way of knowing what opportunity might lie ahead," he says. He recounts seven different careers beginning with a role in a movie, when he was 11 and a new immigrant from Poland, and a stint as owner of a football team.

In the same issue, there's a story by Oakland writer Debbie Cohen on another Oakland writer Joshua Braff, author of "The Unthinkable Thoughts of Jacob Green," plus the magazine's annual Global Philanthropy Register. Yep — there are a few local folks on the list.
