Elias Haim Aelion on July 1, 2005 at home in Oakland, at 86 years of age. Born in Salonica, Greece and immigrated to San Francisco in 1951. Owner and partner of the Fabric Center retail stores in Hayward and San Francisco. A Holocaust survivor, the sole survivor of his entire family living in Greece. Husband of the late Rachel Aelion; father of Sally and Victor. He leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews. He became known as "uncle" to many and will be sadly missed by all who knew him and loved him. He was a truly wonderful man with a great sense of humor and qualities that could not be measured. Services were held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Heart Association or The Holocaust Center of Northern Calif. or charity of your choice.
Harold Knobbe in Kentfield, June 9, 2005 at the age of 75. Born and educated in New York (DeWitt-Clinton High to an MBA at CCNY), he met his wife at the 92nd Street YMCA. Assigned to the Presidio of San Francisco 1952-54, he remained in the Bay Area. Retired from a career in public and employee relations, he delighted in drawing computer cartoons, a panel of which appeared at the Cartoon Art Museum. He contended with Alzheimer's disease with gallantry and grace. Survived by his wife, Persis, his son Mitchell Knobbe (and Elizabeth Mollett), his daughter Alisa Knobbe Wynd and four grandchildren: Galen and Owen Knobbe and Rebecca and Jacob Wynd. The family requests donations to Jewish Family and Children's Services, 2150 Post St., San Francisco, CA 94115 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 4340 Redwood Highway, Suite D 314, San Rafael, CA 94903.
Gertrude (Trudy) Edith Levin, at age 81 at peace on June 11, 2005, at her home in Los Altos Hills. She was born in Chicago, and graduated with a degree in Economics from the University of Illinois, where she met her husband of fifty-seven years, Saul Levin, a local practicing C.P.A. Mr. And Mrs. Levin operated a shoe store in Sycamore, Illinois, from 1948 to 1961 when the family moved to Palo Alto. Trudy, as friends knew her, was a loving wife to her husband and devoted mother to her four children Sheila Rinde, Cary Levin, Stewart Levin and Carole Chetrit. In addition, she is survived by nineteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and her younger brother Irwin Dunn. Mrs. Levin was active in supporting numerous Jewish synagogues, schools and charities.
John A. Rose in San Jose, June 20, 2005. Survived by his wife, Jan; children: Jeff (Rosa) and Ted Rose, Kimberly (Robert) Allan, Rob and Jason (Jennifer) Hassing; 11 grandchildren; sisters: Clara Wolf, Helen and Rita Rose; brother, James (Renee) Rose and mother-in-law, Marian Wisnia. Retired from Pacific Bell with 35 years service. Remembered fondly for his dedication to Congregation Shir Hadash, Temple Emanu-El, Yavneh Day School and the Jewish Federation. Funeral services Friday, June 24 at 12:30 p.m. at Congregation Shir Hadash, 20 Cherry Blossom Lane, Los Gatos. Interment following in Los Gatos Memorial Park. Memorial contributions to any of the above organizations preferred.
Irving Carden Sugarman was born in San Francisco on December 23, 1913 and passed away on June 16, 2005. He was the son of Bradford Benjamin Sugarman and Caroline Sugarman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Jane Weingarten Sugarman. He is survived by his sons, Charles Sugarman of Mill Valley and Myron Sugarman of San Francisco and their wives, Sherri Sobel Sugarman and Cynthia Woods, his five grandchildren and one great grandchild, Carrie Sugarman of Truckee, Calif., Stanton Sugarman and his wife Inga, and their son Ben of Hamburg, Germany, Andy Sugarman and his wife Amanda, of Detroit, Mich., Amy Sugarman of Brentwood, Calif., and Adam Sugarman of San Francisco. He was also preceded in death by his brother Myron "Googie" Sugarman. He is also survived by his great friend and loving companion, Frederica Lewis. He was a graduate of Lowell High School, the University of California, Berkeley, Class of '34, and Boalt Hall Law School. He was a highly regarded trial lawyer and professional level photographer and cinematographer. A pioneer snow skier, he was also an avid yachtsman. He was an honorary life member and former director of the San Francisco Yacht Club as well as a director of the Belvedere Cove Foundation. He spent much of his wonderful life traveling to all the corners of the world. He was a man of intense energy, high intellect and principle with talents appreciated by all who knew and adored him. This included great friends from as far away as England, Austria and India. Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, July 13 at 3:00 p.m. at the San Francisco Yacht Club in Belvedere, Calif. The family prefers contributions to the Belvedere Cove Foundation, Boalt Hall School of Law, or the Jewish Home.
