Cohen, Helene Gates. Passed away peacefully with her husband and daughters by her side on June 4, 2005. Helene fought a courageous battle with her illness with grace, humor and amazing strength. Helene was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and good friend to many. To all, she will be remembered as a person of exceptional distinction. Daughter of the late Rose and Robert Gaines, Helene is survived by her husband, Alvin C. Cohen; daughters and their spouses, Roberta and Rusty Holden, Karen and Harvey Daniels and Lisa and Ed Schuller; her adored grandchildren, Alexander Holden, Hava and Adina Daniels and Lauren and Megan Schuller. Helene graduated from Piedmont High School and U.C. Berkeley and lived in San Francisco for her adult years as a vibrant participant in the community. She cherished her family, charmed her wide circle of friends and loved entertaining. Helene was devoted to working on behalf of our community and was especially passionate about serving on the Board Of Directors of Congregation Emanu-El and the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society, as well as working with Jewish Family and Children's Services of San Francisco and the Auxiliary of the Fine Arts Museums. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at Congregation Emanu-El, 2 Lake St., SF. The family requests donations in Helene's memory to UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center, Medical Oncology, 1600 Divisadero St., 4th Floor, SF, CA 94115 or Congregation Emanu-El.

Kaplan, Eileen L.S. In Stanford, June 2, 2005. Beloved wife of the late Leonard Kaplan. Loving mother of Francine Fehl (Kenneth) and Cheri Der (James). Devoted grandmother of Michael Fehl (Melissa), Jennifer Manfredi (TJ), Brandon Der, Miranda Der and great-grandmother of Tahlia Fehl. Dear sister of Sally Levinson, Sandra Shalof and Harriet Stone. A past president and member of Sequoia Chapter of Hadassah and founding member of Congregation Beth Am. Funeral services and interment were held Sunday, June 5, at Hills of Eternity Memorial Park, Colma, under the direction of Sinai Memorial Chapel, Redwood City. Memorial contributions may be made to Sequoia Chapter of Hadassah, c/o 1400 Coleman Ave., Ste. F-15, Santa Clara, CA 95050.

Mendel, Edward I. Born March 21, 1921. Passed away May 26, 2005. Beloved husband of Florence. Devoted father of Lynne (Austin) Godsey and Debra (Steve) Freedman. Cherished grandfather of Evyn. Edward was past commander of the Jewish War Veterans #688, past president of B'nai Brith Peninsula Lodge 1312 and a member of the Elks.

Rubottom, Florence H. In Auburn, CA, June 2, 2005. Born and raised in San Francisco, Age 92. Wife of the late Lawrence Horenstein, William Belfer and Ira Rubottom. Loving partner of the late Kenneth Brown. Loving mother of Michael (and Ann) Horenstein, Lois (and Peter) Gilbert. Sister of the late Lillian Galant. Devoted grandmother of Pamela Horenstein (and Shari Unitan), Jonathan Horenstein (and Bill Prudich), Yael Lachman (and Tracye Lawson), Mark (and Dyana Lachman, Jeff (and Erica) Gilbert and Tracy (and Jesse) Gilbert Reyes. Adoring great-grandmother of Julianne, Spencer, Alec and Lily. Dear aunt of Linda Harris (and Leonard) Chaban, Phyllis (and the late Jerome) Sherman. Great-aunt of many grandnieces and nephews. Friends and family are welcome to attend the memorial service Tuesday June 7th at 2 pm at Skylawn Memorial Park, Route 35 at Highway 92, San Mateo, CA.
