Despite anti-Semitic probe, Pentagon may promote general
air force academy, colo. (ap) | The Pentagon said this week it wants to promote a top commander at the Air Force Academy — a born-again Christian who has been the subject of complaints that he improperly mixes religion with education.
The announcement about Brig. Gen. Johnny Weida came before the arrival of a task force investigating allegations that cadets were pressured to attend religious services, public prayers were held before official events and Jewish cadets were harassed and insulted at the Colorado Springs school.
Pentagon spokesman Col. Gary Keck said he could not comment on whether the board that recommended Weida's promotion knew of the religious-tolerance inquiry.
Bush declares Jewish Heritage Week
washington (jta) | President Bush declared May 8-15 as Jewish Heritage Week.
"America is stronger and more hopeful because of the industry, talent and imagination of Jewish Americans from around the world," Bush said in his proclamation, issued May 5. "Their commitment to excellence in science, public service, law, athletics, literature and countless other fields has enriched our nation and enhanced our culture. Through strong ties to family and community, Jewish Americans reflect a compassionate spirit and set a positive example for others."
He also cited the role of American Jews in the armed services.
AIPAC elects new president
washington (jta) | The American Israel Public Affairs Committee named Baltimore philanthropist Howard Friedman as its president-elect. Friedman, a longtime member of the board of the pro-Israel lobby, will assume the presidency in 2006.
Friedman will succeed Bernice Manocherian at AIPAC.
"Howard Friedman represents the best of America's pro-Israel movement," AIPAC spokesman Josh Block said.
Hadassah gets new leader
new york (jta) | Hadassah named a new national executive director.
Morlie Hammer Levin, who recently was vice president for strategic donor initiatives at Los Angeles' Jewish federation, will take over in the top professional slot at Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, in early September.
