los angeles (jta) | ABC broadcast an episode Monday of “One Life to Live” in which the show’s Jewish character celebrates Rosh Hashanah with her son.

Character Nora Buchanan and her son Matthew celebrate Rosh Hashanah and look forward to the start of the new year.

They talk about having cast off their sins as bread crumbs into the river, light candles and say Kaddish for loved ones. Also during the celebration of Rosh Hashanah, Matthew confesses to Nora that he tried to get her back together with his father, Bo Buchanan.

Bittersweet romance

sweeps Israeli Oscars

jerusalem (jta) | The bittersweet romance “Nina’s Tragedies” won almost all the Israeli Academy of Film Awards.

The only exception to the film’s sweep of the top prizes at the Sept. 24 ceremony was the award for best actor, which went to Arieh Elias for his role in the drama “James’ Journey to Jerusalem.” The prize for best documentary went to “The 17th Victim,” a film about the quest to identify a fatality in a suicide bombing.

Opera banned by Hitler to open in New York

new york (jta) | An opera banned by Hitler about a heroic Jewish woman will get a second life in New York.

The 19th-century opera, “The Jewess,” by French composer Jacques Halevy, is about a Jewish woman boiled in oil for refusing to convert to Christianity. It will debut Nov. 6 at the Metropolitan Opera, 70 years after Hitler barred the show, the New York Post reported.

Jason Alexander, Mary Hart and Leonard Maltin are among the participants involved in a nationally televised Yom Kippur service, set to air 6:30 a.m. Sunday on the Hallmark Channel’s Faith and Values TV.

“Yom Kippur: Prayers of Atonement,” is presented by the Los Angeles-based Temple of the Air, a service of Temple Shalom for the Arts, with additional support from the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. Check local listings for station information.
