"I think it is unnecessary and divisive. The Constitution should not be amended to respond to a political or social argument of the moment,'' he said.
Lieberman said he has worked hard on civil and human rights "to protect all Americans from discrimination, particularly on sexual orientation.''
He said he would take "one right by one right, one benefit by one benefit,'' and used the example of a gay couple with one partner ill and the other without the right to visit in a hospital.
"That's wrong,'' he said. "We ought to provide for that by statute. I think that's the best way to provide equality and still maintain the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.''
