From tutors to kosher cooks, many agencies seek helpers

The Volunteer Action Center of the Jewish Community Federation of the Greater East Bay has a long list of projects in need of volunteers. Opportunities include one-time efforts as well as long- term commitments in the Jewish and general communities.

In addition to providing immigrants and refugees with tutoring and other services, volunteers can work on restoring native habitat in wilderness areas, mentor new businesspersons who are turning their lives around, help out at Jewish cultural events and play with children whose parents are attending job-training classes.

In the region served by the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation, the Volunteer Placement Project of Jewish Information & Referral lists volunteer opportunities, from Sonoma to Sunnyvale.

Among them are the On the Mark Tutor-Mentor program or the Safe at Home telephone-call program of the S.F.-based Jewish Family and Children's Services, ushering for the performances of A Traveling Jewish Theatre, or serving as a career information assistant or mock interviewer at Jewish Vocational Services.
