Non-Jew honored for saving star from Nazis
by BERLIN (JTA) -- An aging non-Jew from Dresden has received a government medal of honor for rescuing a Star of David when he was, Alfred Neugebauer, now 89, saw a synagogue burn to the ground on Kristallnacht, the night of Nov. 9, 1938, when Nazis ransacked

He hid the star, about 27 inches in diameter, in a carpenter's shop near his house. After the war Neugebauer returned it to the tiny Jewish community that survived.
Now, 63 years later, it is being dedicated to a new synagogue on the site of the original building.
