"Never before in the history of the Bay Area have Jews come together in a formal way to promote literacy," says Tamis.
The JCL, which began in 1999 and now has 500 volunteers, is working in partnership with San Francisco School Volunteers, the Beacon Centers and various other programs to reach 650 Bay Area children on an annual basis.
The JCL is a joint project of the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Jewish Community Federation. Grants for the project are provided by the Jewish Community Endowment Fund and the Alexander M. and June L. Maisin Foundation.
