8 ways to light up the holiday

by Chanukah is an opportunity to turn eight consecutive nights during the dark and chilly winter into moments of light for you and, *Clean out the closets and toy chests. Donate items to a local toy or clothing drive, or to a local social service agency.

*Volunteer at a local soup kitchen or senior center, or help deliver holiday baskets.

*Play a game of dreidel using Chanukah gelt as "gambling money."

*Listen to Chanukah songs or learn new ones. Compose a family poem.

*Learn to make latkes and sufganiot (jelly doughnuts).

*Plan your tzedakah for the next year. Consider the issues that are important and discuss with family members how to put your values into action.

*As you light the chanukiah, ask family members to dedicate candles for special people in their lives.
