Our God and God of the Generations

by Rabbi H. David Teitelbaum, the executive director of the Northern California board of rabbis, offers this prayer to end the viol

We pray for an end to the violence, which can only escalate unless it is stopped now, this very day.

Help us to understand that there are more productive and more humane expressions of grievances than stones and bullets, and Molotov cocktails, and acts of terrorism.

We pray for the families of the fallen and the injured; may they find comfort and healing in this trying time.

We pray that the leaders who are meeting in Egypt will realize that only honest and respectful negotiations can lead to a just and secure peace for all of the peoples in the region.

Today, as we celebrate the Festival of Sukkot, with its promise and its vision of Sukkat Shalom - a Sukkah of Peace -- we pray for the day when Israelis and Palestinians will gather together under a Sukkah of peace - may that day come speedily in our time.

In the words of the prophet: Then everyone will sit under his vine and his figtree, and no one shall make them afraid. (Micah 4:4)
