Media’s crash course in Judaism

What a paradox we Jews are facing with the Democratic Party nomination of Sen. Joseph Lieberman for vice president.
On the one hand, we are happy; on another, we worry about an increase in anti-Semitism.
Even the head of the Anti-Defamation League, Abraham Foxman, is surprised to hear Jewish fears. He says the incidence of anti-Semitism is at its lowest in U.S. history, and there is no need to be concerned that Lieberman's candidacy will cause us problems.
But while Jews do what they normally do -- worry -- the rest of the nation is finding itself enrolled in an Introduction to Judaism class.
Television and newspapers are explaining to viewers and readers what Judaism is all about, especially Orthodox Judaism.
Lieberman's synagogue visit this past Shabbat got heavy coverage, including an explanation of the Jewish Sabbath, from kiddush to havdallah.
Americans learned what it means to be kosher. They've also been told what Shabbat observance means, and why Lieberman can't drive or turn on lights. In fact, if he is elected, they've learned of the problem he will face with an inauguration that falls on Shabbat.
In a few weeks, we will see more coverage of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur than we have ever witnessed. As Lieberman stops campaigning to observe the High Holy Days, readers and viewers will be thrust on a religious tour with him.
And that tour may include visits to Lieberman's sukkah and then another trip to a synagogue for Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.
Many Jews who watch TV or read newspapers will learn much about their own religion as well.
As all Americans gain greater understanding of what Jews are all about, tolerance and acceptance of Jews will increase.
Whether or not we plan to vote for Lieberman, we should appreciate the educational opportunity that his candidacy presents.
