by The Bay Area's Jewish community celebrated Israel's 52nd birthday Sunday with a bash at Fort Mason's Great Meadow., On a San Francisco day that was sunny and slightly breezy, more than 5,000 people attended the five-hour festival, according to

Also popular was Makolet Shel Israel, a grocery store sponsored by the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation's Israel Center. All afternoon, people packed the tent to buy soup, nuts, pumpkin seeds and corn puffs.
Middle Eastern food also was abundant, as was Chinese food, hot dogs, popcorn, pizza and cotton candy at the "Israel in the Meadows" event.
The Golden Gate Bridge provided a backdrop to the stage where three musical acts performed: Mozaik, Corinne Allal and Esta. Jews of all ages practiced their folk dancing on the grass.
