NEW YORK (JTA) -- U.S. Jewish groups are oppposing legislation that would ban the use of classified information to deport suspected terrorists.
An Anti-Defamation League official criticized the Secret Evidence Repeal Act during testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, and has instead called for an approach that would balance the rights of suspected terrorists with national security interests.
The American Jewish Congress and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs also oppose the legislation.
Jews must stand alone against Avis in class action lawsuit
NEW YORK (JTA) -- A class action lawsuit against a rental car company for allegedly denying Jews corporate accounts cannot proceed, a U.S. appeals court ruled Tuesday.
The court ruled that the plaintiffs' claims must be regarded on an individual, not class-action, basis.
The lawsuit alleged Avis Rent-A-Car deliberately barred Jewish customers from holding accounts and labeled them with the code word "yeshiva."
University courses increasing for Jewish women in the U.S.
NEW YORK (JTA) -- The number of university courses that focus on Jewish women is on the rise, but half the courses are offered irregularly and by visiting or adjunct professors, according to a Brandeis University study.
The research found that 188 Jewish women's studies courses, ranging from "Changing Roles of Jewish Women" to "Gender, the Body and Sexuality in Judaism," are taught at 85 North American colleges.
Universities with large Jewish populations were recommended to increase their support for Jewish women's studies courses.
