Yom HaShoah commemorated

by Candle flames flickered throughout the Bay Area this week as Jews remembered those who died in the Holocaust., Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, began at sunset Monday.

On Sunday, youths performed "Children of the Holocaust" -- a dramatic presentation from the Children's Museum in Israel -- at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park.

In San Francisco, "The Holocaust and Its Aftermath: San Francisco Responses from 1943 to the Present" was the topic at Congregation Emanu-El on Monday night.

Three survivors and three teens held a "Dialogue Between the Generations" Monday at Temple Beth Sholom in San Leandro.

In Walnut Creek, Holocaust survivor Peri Scheinok recalled how he lived under Nazi rule before he came to the United States in 1942. He spoke Monday at Congregation B'nai Shalom.

On Sunday, the film "The Last Days" screened at Peninsula Temple Beth El in San Mateo.

And in Los Altos Hills on Monday, Auschwitz survivor Linda Breder spoke at Congregation Beth Am on "Holocaust and Redemption."
