Darwish is known for his poems about longing for Palestine and the suffering of displaced Palestinians. Ministry spokeswoman Rivka Shraga said that none of the works taught would have a nationalist content.
Other Palestinian poets included in the curriculum are Naeem Arydi and Siham Dahoud.
On Monday, Likud gave notice of a motion of no-confidence.
“This is just an extreme example of what’s been going on here for some years,” said Knesset member Yuval Steinitz during a Likud faction discussion of the issue. “It’s becoming increasingly common to legitimate those who try to delegitimize us.”
