Police spokesman Uzi Sandori said police decided to launch the investigation based on an informant's tip. He said police suspect Amedi of presenting inflated bills and receiving bribes for work he carried out.
On Tuesday, Amedi was questioned regarding work he carried out for the Netanyahus. Details of the affair were revealed in Tuesday's Yediot Achranot, which claimed Amedi had carried out work and provided services for the Netanyahus over a period of three years.
When Netanyahu lost the elections this spring, the report claims Amedi presented the Prime Minister's Office a bill for $110,000. The Treasury authorized payment to him of $12,500.
According to the report, Netanyahu claimed he never asked Amedi to carry out work for him.
At Tuesday night's hearing, Amedi's lawyer denied the accusations. Amedi's wife was briefly detained for questioning, but later placed under house arrest, Army Radio reported.
