Israel may nix 50 years of ‘state of emergency’

by JERUSALEM (JPS) -- Justice Minister Yossi Beilin said last week that he wants to end the state of emergency that has been in eff, "There is no justification today for living in a state of emergency," said Beilin. "I am sure it causes injustice."

Beilin will suggest the government preserve those regulations essential to safeguard national security.

"The government's powers will not be nearly as sweeping. That will be much less convenient for it, but only the government can divest itself of power...A democracy of 51 years cannot justify living in a state of emergency."
