Ex-navy chief kills self after Dakar found

In 1976, he was appointed commander of the navy but resigned in 1979 after an investigation was launched into charges he had sexually assaulted a female non-commissioned officer. While a military tribunal acquitted Barkai of the charges, it also ruled that it believed he had committed the acts of which he was accused.

Barkai's health had deteriorated over the past year.
