The front-runners are Finance Minister Meir Sheetrit, who has given notice of his intention to compete, and Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert, who has remained silent. But those close to him say he will declare his candidacy soon.

Sharon, who has always favored a national unity government, will begin talks with Prime Minister-elect Ehud Barak. It's possible Sharon could continue as foreign minister in the new government.
