The one-year program is for adults between the ages of 21 to 35. The first seven months focus on studying Hebrew as well as Jewish and Israeli culture. For the next five months, the program helps place students in desired salaried jobs.
Yifat Shoham, WUJS' director, says the program is an efficient and friendly way to slip into the Israeli scene.
"There's a time in people's life when you want to explore different options. Before you settle down with a career, you can take time to come to Israel and find out what it's all about."
While Shoham acknowledged that it seems every Israeli already knows one another in the small country, the 31-year-old WUJS program prides itself on helping students network with professionals and locals. Students stay in furnished apartments while in Arad and are connected to host families.
The program costs $2,200; sessions begin every June, October and February.
In addition to Hebrew classes, seminar topics range from religion to current events. This year, a class will focus on the May elections. Another class is looking at the ins and outs of Israel culture, including a day on the topic "Israel is a nice place, except for the Israelis!"
Students will also go on hiking excursions and can volunteer for community projects.
"The program combines all the elements needed to build a network," Shoham said. "Some end up making aliyah. Some people in the program even get married."
Shoham is looking for Jews of all levels, from religious to barely involved. Those interested persons can contact Ami Blaszkowsky, director of WUJS' North American office, (888) WUJS-INS.
