Irving Newman has been involved in local Jewish affairs for 50 years. He was director of the Peninsula Jewish Community Center from 1949 to 1952, then became the Marin Jewish Community Center's first director in 1952, a position he held until 1959. He became the religious leader of Congregation B'nai Israel in Petaluma in 1963. Though he relinquished the position in 1969, he remains active in the synagogue.
