Lucky bought its lower-cost matzah from distributor RexPacific of Hayward, which entered the kosher market for the first time last year.

Before then, Passover matzah was selling for an average $13 and $14 for five pounds; longtime kosher wholesaler J. Sosnick & Son of South San Francisco had a corner on the market.

The hype over Passover matzah prices started in 1997 when store prices nearly doubled over the previous year. A Sosnick spokesman has said his prices increased by only 8 percent because of increased freight costs.

Several area synagogues and one Judaica store entered the fray last spring by selling RexPacific's lower-cost matzah.
