‘Saved by the Bay’ Ephemera illustrating the lives of scholars and intellectuals who fled European fascism  and shaped the academic direction of the University of California makes up a new exhibition at Berkeley’s Magnes collection. Letters, photographs, film, travel documents and other artifacts were collected and studied by U.C. Berkeley students, faculty and museum curators, depicting the lives of 70 scholars who came to Berkeley as refugees in the 1930s. Opening reception is at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29. Exhibition is on display 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Through June 27 at the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, 2121 Allston Way, Berkeley. Free.
