President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Cairo for the first visit to Egypt by an Iranian leader in more than 30 years.
Ahmadinejad arrived Feb. 5 for a three-day visit and was greeted by President Mohamed Morsi, the leader of Egypt’s Islamist Muslim Brotherhood.
In an interview the day before, Ahmadinejad said that he would like to visit Gaza before he steps down as president in June. He added, “My wish is bigger than this. I wish to pray in Jerusalem after complete liberation.”
Ahmadinejad was in Cairo to attend the Organization of Islamic Cooper-ation summit on Feb. 6. While he was shaking hands with supporters on Feb. 5, a group of men hurled shoes at him, a major insult in the Muslim world. — jta
