One of the righteous
If anyone deserves to be enshrined as a hero, it’s Aristides de Sousa Mendes. The Portuguese diplomat, stationed in Bordeaux, France during World War II, saved an estimated 10,000 Jews by issuing visas that allowed them to escape to Portugal. In all, he gave about 30,000 visas, to Jews and non-Jews alike, risking his career and his life. Congregation Beth David in Saratoga will join with the Portuguese community in San Jose to honor Sousa Mendes. In addition to dedicating a plaque to the wartime hero, the event will include a screening of “Disobedience: The Sousa de Mendes Story” and a viewing of the exhibit “These Are My People!” Beth David previously has honored Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat to Lithuania who similarly saved thousands of Jews during the war.
