Trans-Israel Highway gets OK

Sarid, Tzur, and Beilin said the superhighway would badly damage agricultural areas and nature reserves and does not present a long-term solution to the traffic problem.

They also suggested giving higher salaries to employees instead of car allowances, which only gives people impetus to buy cars.

Shohat said the highway is only one of the transportation infrastructures that had to be created to keep the country from turning into one big traffic jam. Also needed are improved roads, he said, and better mass transit in cities.
