In an expansion of its two existing quarters on Steiner Street and Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco's Congregation Emanu-El Sisterhood announces plans to build a new boarding home for 60 employed Jewish young women.

The first issue of the Jewish Community Bulletin and Emanu-El is published under the editorship of Eugene Block.

More than 300 Jews picket the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C., to protest the death sentences of two Jews in Leningrad for an alleged attempt to hijack a Soviet airplane seven months earlier.
