Volunteers for Israel holds local reunion

Volunteers for Israel celebrated its bar mitzvah year with a local reunion of past participants last month.

Reda Mansour, Israel's consul for the region, and Ahron Davidi, an Israeli general who founded the program in 1982, spoke at the event on Nov. 19 at Congregation Sherith Israel in San Francisco.

The program brings Jews from the diaspora to volunteer for three weeks on Israeli army bases. Volunteers for Israel has year-round departure dates and welcomes anyone over age 18. For more information, call the regional office at (415) 752-8554.

ORT seeks donations for women's shelters

Women's American ORT is seeking holiday donations for families living in Bay Area women's shelters.

ORT is asking for educational toys and materials; school supplies; new or used children's books and videos; and books on parenting, careers, and personal development.

The project is part of the ORT Bay Area Young Leadership Round Table's Project Reach. Donations will be accepted through Dec. 15 to reach shelters by Chanukah.

Collection locations include Peninsula Temple Beth El in San Mateo, Congregation Sinai in Foster City, Peninsula Temple Sholom in Burlingame, the Peninsula Jewish Community Center in Belmont; and the Albert L. Congregation Ner Tamid to host Chanukah sing-along in S.F.

Congregation Ner Tamid, 1250 Quintara St., S.F., will offer an evening of Chanukah songs and candle-lighting on the last night of the holiday, Sunday, Dec. 24.

The "Great American Song Sing-along" will feature Cantor Cory Winter and guest soloist Cantor Roslyn Barak. Desserts and coffee follow the event, which starts at 8 p.m..

Tickets cost $18 for adults and $12 for children under age 18. Special sponsor tickets, which include a reserved seat and mention in the program, cost $25. Reservation deadline is Dec. 20.
