Ninth Jewish cultural festival opens in Berlin

Kanal stressed the event's importance, expressing regrets that — since the Holocaust so vastly diminished Berlin's Jewish population — event planners had to invite numerous artists from outside Berlin to participate.

Each year, the festival focuses on a different region. While Jerusalem is this year's choice, Paris and Los Angeles have been celebrated at previous festivals.

Moscow and New York are being considered for next year's event, said Andreas Nachama, organizer of the festival and son of the city's chief cantor.
